Normally, most returns are processed by the ATO within two to four weeks but sometimes they can take longer. These are some of the reasons why:
- The ATO identify omitted income
- The ATO need to cross-check data with other government agencies, including Centrelink and Child Support
- If you have an outstanding debt with the ATO
- If you are insolvent
- Your Tax File Number (TFN) may have been compromised
- The ATO has queries about the information provided in the return.
If any of the above happens then the ATO will need to review the details and possibly request clarification or further information.
